Medvedchuk was detained: what is known
In the evening of April 12, Volodymyr Zelenskyi announced that Viktor Medvedchuk had been detained as a result of a special operation by the Security Service of Ukraine. Later, the head of state offered russia to exchange captured Ukrainians for putin’s detained godfather.
Medvedchuk is suspected of treason in two criminal cases.
On May 12, 2021, the deputy was handed over on suspicion of treason and violation of the laws and customs of war (Article 111 and Article 438 of the Criminal Code) in the case of looting national resources in the occupied Crimea, disclosure of state secrets and subversive activities against Ukraine.
In October of the same year, Medvedchuk was declared a new suspect in treason and aiding and abetting terrorism in the so-called “coal case” (Article 111 and Part 1 of Article 258-3 of the Criminal Code). The DBR is investigating a criminal scheme to supply coal from the temporarily occupied territories and aid a group of Ukrainian citizens to the LNR and DNR terrorist organizations. Medvedchuk’s activities in the “coal case” were documented by law enforcement agencies in 2016.
On February 27, 2022, Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to the Minister of the Interior, announced that Medvedchuk had escaped from house arrest.
