Pope Francis condemned the massacre in Bucha near Kyiv and raised the Ukrainian flag, which was handed to him from the city where hundreds of civilians were shot.
This is stated in the message vaticannews. In a general audience, Pope Francis called for prayer for the innocent victims and for an end to the war in Ukraine.
The pontiff noted that the news of the war in Ukraine, instead of bringing relief and hope, brings new atrocities, such as the massacre in Bucha.
“Yesterday this flag was brought to me from Bucha”, – Francis said. The Pope stood up and unfurled the flag, and then said: “This flag came from the war, from this long-suffering city of Bucha. And there are also several Ukrainian children who are now here with us”. “It is difficult to be uprooted from our land because of the war”, – the Pope added.
